negli ultimi anni tiziano dipinse una serie di dipinti dedicati alla passione di cristo . Questi includono : incoronazione di spine ( alte pinakothek , Monaco ) , beffardo di cristo ( museo d'arte , St . Louis ) , ecce homo ( l'eremo , St . Petersburg ) e due versioni di cristo che porta la croce ( l'eremo , St . pietroburgo e museo del prado , Madrid ) . In queste opere , pervaso da un immenso potere drammatico , le pennellate si dissolvono gradualmente in tocchi di pigmento applicati rapidamente . L'obiettivo non è più quello di riprodurre la natura, ma di trasmettere direttamente l'emozione cruda del pittore , che partecipa pienamente al tragico soggetto della foto .
